Lion hunter

Parc de la Ciutadella

Sculptor: Agapito Vallmitjana i Abarca, signed
Materials: White marble on limestone
Inauguration: September 21, 1883

On September 21, 1883, the sculpture of Agapito Vallmitjana y Abarca, El cazador de leones (the lion hunter), also known as El africano (The african), was installed in the Ciutadella Park. Vallmitjana y Abarca was the son of Venanci Vallmitjana and Barbany and with his brother, who was also called Agapito, he worked with the sculptures of the entrance doors to the Ciutadella Park. The lion hunter was commissioned by the City Council, formalized in April 1883. A year later, the sculpture won a medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid. Vallmitjana specialized in making sculptures that represented animals, such as the lions on the main stairway of the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia, those on the monument to Columbus and another placed in the zoo on the year of its centenary, in 1992.

Initially, Josep Fontseré, author of the design of the Park of the Ciutadella, foresaw a series of sculptures on hunting and this is reminiscent of that original idea.
