On July 16, 1879, a commission chaired by the industrial Ignacio Jaumandreu launched the project to make a monument to the memory of the writer and economist Bonaventura Carles Aribau (Barcelona, 1798-1862). The intention was to pay homage to the man who, with his poem, “Oda a la patria”, had been the driving force behind the Catalan Renaixença.

Two commissions were organized in Madrid, where Aribau had worked for many years, and in Barcelona. The first failed in the attempt to raise funds, but that of Barcelona collected around 5,000 pesetas. On December 15, 1884, the year that was celebrated half a century of the famous poem, the monument, the work of the sculptor Manuel Fuxà and the architect Josep Vilaseca, was placed in the Parque de la Ciutadella, which was still under construction. The week of festivals and fairs of Santo Tomás was taken advantage of, particularly that year, with a Te Deum to thank God for having saved Barcelona from the cholera epidemic (there was not the same fate in 1885, when it affected the city squarely.) The festivities had a particular impact on the Ciutadella Park, where the doors of the entrance and sculpture of Jaume Salvador were also inaugurated, in front of the Geology Museum. In the case of Aribau there was a deficit of 2,500 pesetas, and Barcelona’s newspaper opened a subscription to wipe the debt. On May 6, 1934, after the Floral Games, as years ago, and on the occasion of the centenary of the “Oda a la Patria”, a plaque was put on the street of Aribau, the work of the municipal architect Félix de Azua, suppressed during the Franco regime. It was also decided to replace the stone statue, by Fuxà, with a bronze copy, which was also commissioned by the sculptor Enric Monjo.

The monument and balustrade of the gazebo were restored in the years 2000-2001 when the circular bench was introduced that determines the delivery of the pedestal on the ground, before a small hill of gardening.
