Antonio Machín

Plaça Vicenç Martorell

Subías Berlinghieri, workshop
Materials: Plate and bronze medal on stone
Inauguration: August 4, 1981

In 1981, when the famous Cuban singer Antonio Machín (Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1901 - Madrid, 1977) had died four years ago, a group of friends decided to promote a monolith that would remember his memory. Machín had lived continuously in Spain since the beginning of the Second World War. First, money was collected at a festival held at the Sports Palace, in which Rudy Ventura and Raúl del Castillo, among others, participated. José Luis Maruendas, from the famous cocktail bar Boadas de la Rambla and a personal friend of the singer, was careful to ask for the corresponding permits to get a suitable place, which was the Plaza del Bonsuccés. They placed the monument on August 4, 1981, the birthday of his death, and every 4th of August there are usually flowers. Machín had bought a flat in a new building that was built in the neighboring Plaza del Bonsuccés, but he died before being able to open it.
